Verification Status Explained

Last updated

Every story on Reported.News carries a verification status. It tells you how much we know at that moment, and it changes as the evidence does. Each change is time-stamped on the story.

Reported

One credible source. A claim is being made by a credible source, and we are telling you that it is being said. We have not yet been able to corroborate it independently. Treat it as early information.

Corroborated

Two or more independent sources. At least two sources that did not rely on each other support the claim.

Confirmed

Primary source or official confirmation. The claim is confirmed by the original document, data or an on-the-record statement from the person or organisation concerned.

Disputed

Credible evidence against. Credible evidence contradicts the claim, or the people involved deny it. We show what is in dispute and why.

Retracted

Withdrawn. We got it wrong, or the claim has been shown to be false. We keep the story visible with an explanation rather than deleting it.
